Scientific Linux è una distribuzione GNU/Linux, creata dal “Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory” e dall’ “European Organization for Nuclear Research” (CERN) e mira ad essere compatibile al 100% con i pacchetti basati su .rpm e la distro è basata su Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Questo prodotto è derivato dal free software reso disponibile da Red Hat, ma non è prodotta, mantenuta o supportata da Red Hat inc.

Scientific Linux 4.8 has been released. We want to thank all those who have contributed packages and time, helping us build and test this release. Scientific Linux 4.8 doesn’t have any exciting new features, it is just a nice, stable release.
Scientific Linux release 4.8 is based on the rebuilding of RPMS out of SRPMS’s from Enterprise 4, including Update 8. It also all errata and bugfixes up until July 20, 2009.
